The second customer

Your customer gets one link. No login, no password, no app.

Everyone in this market sells you something. Software does your paperwork. An assistant answers your phone. Nobody’s offer includes the person the job is actually for — and that is the person who decides whether you work again.

What your customer sees

An illustrative example — not a real client’s page:

What they never see

This is the part contractors ask about first, so it is worth being exact. Your customer sees where the job stands and the documents you pick out. They do not see:

  • Your costs, your margins, or what you paid a sub
  • Your other jobs, or that you are busy on them
  • Your notes about a supplier, a sub, or a problem you are still working
  • Anything you have not deliberately put in front of them

Nothing reaches your customer without your say-so. That is not a setting buried in a menu — it is how the system is wired, and it is the same rule that covers money and commitments.

Why it matters more than it sounds

A homeowner who has not heard anything does not assume you are busy. He assumes something is wrong. So he calls — during the day, when you are on a ladder — and you call back at nine at night, and the cycle costs you the evening and tells him nothing.

Worse is the version where he does not call. He stews, he mentions it to his wife, she mentions it to the neighbour, and by the time the job finishes the story about you has already been written by someone else. That story is what decides whether you get the next one.

Most of the friction with a customer comes from not knowing, not from the work. Somebody who can see where the job stands stops asking, and starts defending you when someone else asks.

Two customers, not one. You, and the person your job is for. A software subscription serves you and leaves the rest to you. An assistant answers to you alone. We are the only ones on the hook with both — which is why the portal exists at all, and why somebody answers your customer properly instead of just acknowledging them.

The half nobody else covers

We went looking. Across the companies selling assistants, project coordinators and construction project managers to contractors, almost none of them mention the contractor’s customer at all. The service lists run: permits, scheduling, estimates, invoices, follow-ups, inspections. Every one of those is about your side of the job. None of them is about the person paying for it.

We think that is the whole gap in this market. The work is not the risk. The relationship is.

Questions contractors ask

Does my customer need an account?

No. They get one link. No login, no password, no app to install, nothing to remember. That is the whole design: every extra step is a reason for them not to look, and a customer who does not look is a customer who calls you instead.

What exactly can my customer see?

Only what you choose to share. They see where the job stands and the documents you pick out. They do not see your costs, your margins, your other jobs, your notes about a sub, or anything you have not deliberately put in front of them.

Does this replace talking to them?

No, and it is not meant to. Somebody still answers the phone and calls them back. The portal stops the “just checking in” calls that eat your day and tell them nothing. The calls that matter still happen, and they happen with somebody who knows the answer.

Why does this matter if I already update them myself?

Because the weeks you are busiest are exactly the weeks you go quiet, and quiet is what costs you the reputation. A homeowner who has not heard anything does not assume you are busy. He assumes something is wrong, and he starts asking around.

Do other companies do this?

Software companies give you a portal you still have to fill in yourself, and they only ever serve you. An assistant answers your phone but does not answer to your customer. As far as we can tell, nobody else takes on the customer relationship as part of the job.

Is this an app I have to get them to download?

No. It is a web page behind a link. It works on whatever they already have, including the phone in their hand.

Can I control what gets published?

Yes, and that is the default rather than a setting you have to find. Nothing goes to your customer without your say-so — the same rule that covers money and commitments.

What if my customer is difficult about it?

Then they get the same link and the same person answering. A customer who is being kept informed is usually a customer who is easier to deal with, because most of the friction comes from not knowing, not from the work.
